David Beckham Signs for LA Galaxy in £128million Deal

It was released today that David Beckham will sign for MLS outfit LA Galaxy in a deal worth £128million! He has signed a 5 year contract which will begin when his contract at Real Madrid runs out in June 2007.

I found out that he had signed for LA Galaxy this afternoon however I only just heard tonight that he would be earning around about £500,000 a week… I heard this on the 3 Legends radio show on Century FM. At the time I was heading over to my local retail park to buy myself a new USB Pen Drive, my 256mb was too small for my needs and the casing had split open. I ended up buying a 1GB one, more than sufficient for my needs.

Anyway, back to Becks getting an obscene amount of money…

My brother, Sam, did some calculations to double check this as it quite simply seemed unbelievable! So here it goes, the calculations:

Beckham has signed a 5 year contract. He will get paid weekly.

52 (week in a year) X 5 (years, length of contract) = 260 weeks.

That means that he will be with LA Galaxy for 260 weeks.

£128,000,000 / 260 = £492,307.69 per week.

OBSCENE! That is the only way to describe it.

How can anyone justify £500,000 a week?

Some people don’t even earn that in a lifetime.

I am not jealous, yes it would be nice to have that amount of money, and I am not denying that. I am just incensed that LA Galaxy think that someone is worth £500,000 a week. The majority of people don’t even earn 1% of that a month!

I think it is a ridiculous amount of money, I really do.

It is without doubt, obscene! I do, however, agree with the fact that the Entertainment business is entirely money orientated.

With this in mind if people wish to criticise Footballers, then I feel it only right that they also criticise Movie Starts, Popstars, TV Stars and Magic Stars….. no wait, they are chocolate – you get the point 😉

Despite the above, I do not believe that the money such footballers are on is acceptable, nor do I find the copious amounts of money movie stars are on, acceptable.

It just highlights the sheer money-orientated and driven business that Entertainment is these days. In Football, money is ruling the game and is becoming a sole driver of the ‘business’ (note I didn’t say Club).

It is a sad state of affairs, but sadly that is the affairs of today.

  • Aidan says:

I agree Sam; you put it very well, and you’re completely correct when it comes to describing the Entertainment business. I was on so much of a rant I forgot about that…

I used to like ‘Magic stars’ but I found that they became a bit sickly after a while…

  • Phil Bowell says:

It really is ridiculous. No one is good enough/worth paying that much money for. I saw a little lcip of him saying its not about the money. I sceptical, if it’s not about that then why is he going to play football in the MLS?

Oh, I forget, cos no one else will have him!

I love when you get of topic like that it cracks me up!

Anyway, I am not sure how that converts to USD, but it seems like an awful lot!!! I wish I could make that much.

  • Phil Bowell says:

Nick: I beleive £500,000 is about US$1,000,000. An obscene amount of money!

  • Aidan says:

I believe that it is $247,872,000 so lets say $250,000,000 (which is what all of the news agencies are reporting, so it’s about right) Therefore this means that he is earning $961,538.46 a week (to be precise) . It has been released this morning that his basic wage from LA Galaxy is less than what he was getting at Real Madrid. However, he is receiving all of the royalties and image rights – effectively everything under the Beckham ‘brand’, that’s the reasoning for so much money.

Phil it also leaves me feeling a bit sceptical as to why he went there if it wasn’t for the money, especially if he turned down some top European and British clubs…

  • Sam says:

To be fair to the lad, if you were offered nigh on £500,000/$1,000,000 a week, would you turn it down?

He is also putting his status to good use – helping the game in the USA raise its profile as well as setting up ‘Soccer Schools’ for kids over there.

Please note, however, that I do not believe that anyone is worthy of such a vast amount of money – but he didn’t exactly instigate it; LA Galaxy came and offered him a contract. He may sound a sandwich short of a picnic, but he knows what he is doing.

  • Aidan says:

You couldn’t turn it down could you! I hope he does use his status to good use though, it will be good for American ‘soccer’.

  • Phil Bowell says:

The idea of using his status for the sake of Soccer (it’s football! Their football is played using their hands! How is that football?!) is a good one and it does seem to be generating a lot of media coverage over there, as well as here. But for someone who said he wanted to prove McLaren wrong and regain his place in the England squad moving to the MLS is not going to help. He needs to be in a top league to do that.

  • Aidan says:

I agree with you, he will never get back into the England squad. Although I think he may have realised that already though.

  • Dean says:

i think beckham still has a good chance of gettin back in the england squad and i would of gone back to the premiership and is called football not soccer……….

  • Aidan says:

After recent developments with McClaren I think he does stand a chance of getting back into the squad.

I am aware that it is called Football. If you look Soccer has been used in inverted commas and when soccer schools is referred to it is because that is what Beckham is setting up and that is what they’re called. They are not called Football Schools. He has purposefully done this so that people know that is it Football schools and not American Football Schools.

  • Sam says:

    Well said that man.

  • rob says:

well i think it is a brilliant deal for beckham his self i dont no why you are all complaining cuase you wouldnt mind if u earnd dat much then you wudnt be complaining would you????????

  • jamie says:

u sporny b******, i wish i was earning £50 a week let alone £500,000 and all i can say is good luck to you

  • Sam says:

    You’re missing the point entirely.

Of course he was going to accept it, as would anyone else in his right mind. That money is a dream come true for an EMPLOYEE. The EMPLOYER is the party that is being criticised.

Beckham didn’t even have to negotiate it, it was offered and quickly accepted – as it would be.

The point is, how on earth do LA Galaxy fathom that he is worth that much?

Employer – at fault; Employee – not at fault.

  • Aidan says:

@Rob – I can’t be bothered to re-type what Sam said but I am going to pop in quote to backup what Sam said –

I am not jealous, yes it would be nice to have that amount of money, and I am not denying that. I am just incensed that LA Galaxy think that someone is worth £500,000 a week

Read carefully – “It would be nice to have that amount of money”. I don’t see me saying anywhere that I wouldn’t have that much money.

@Jamie – It is clear that you haven’t read the guidelines of the blog. You may need to go back and read them. Perhaps it hasn’t dawned on you but offensive language can be very offensive to people and I don’t condone the use of it on my blog. Feel free to do what you want when you’re at home in front of your parents but whilst you’re on my blog you should follow my rules. Thank you.

P.S. I have “starred” out the offensive language; it doesn’t take a genius to guess what was in there previously.

  • matt says:

youre all narrow minded idiots full of jealousy. he earned every penny, he is the face of football and for many youngsters he is the reason. you bunch of jealous loosers. he went to america to promote the sport and anything that it includes. if you were in that situation you would never say no so how can you critisise someone with excepional talent and respect. i guess its hard for people who have no gifts and stuck in a job that the think they deserver more money but really are just the average boing joe. you should all look in the mirror and stop complaining about someone who deserves the money and start thinking about working a little harder, you might get rewarded for it, and the nyou can stop bitching.

  • Aidan says:

Not for one minute am I jealous – if you read the post you’ll see that although I guess didn’t bother to read the post in its entirety or the comments for that matter.

Anyone would accept that amount of money, admittedly he is the face of football, but no one is worth that amount of money.

If I was him I would have snapped their hand off at the deal he was given, but anyone would.

Regarding your comments, he has done wonders for the sport in the US and is a great role model for children.

You must understand though, that it is the EMPLOYER (L.A. Galaxy) that is in question NOT the EMPLOYEE (Beckham).

I also have never once critcised Beckham for accepting such a contract, like I said, anyone would. Furthermore I am not bitching by any stretch of the imagination. Although quite honestly, there are very little people in this world who deserve that amount of money.

Please, next time, take a little longer to read fully my wording and the comments to get my side of it rather than jumping to conclusions.
